PS3 Drops to $499 Next Week

Sony and Circuit City stores have been in bed together since before the PS3 came out. Best Buy was always touted as the “official Xbox 360 resource” and naturally Sony and Circuit City came together as best friends shortly after that. Circuit City stores now push Blu-Ray movies and players over HD-DVD on a regular basis as well. Knowing that, as I read the following rumor, I could already tell this was going to be true, not to mention I know the guy who is the source of the rumor, and he’s never been wrong in the years I’ve known him.
The price drop will run from July 15th to July 21st.
GameDaily now says they have confirmed the price drop will be retail-wide starting 7/12, after speaking with a “merchandising manager (who wished to remain anonymous) at one of the world’s biggest retailers”.
This is going to get interesting now. Sony dropping the price (even if it’s temporary) of the PS3 is about the only thing they can do for good press at this point. On a personal note, I just upgraded my digital cable and now have access to the G4 channel, who are broadcasting the Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo press conferences next week Live! I’ll be live blogging the Microsoft conference on Tuesday night as it happens.
