Vindication: Four Player Co-op in Halo 3 Confirmed by Bungie

Posted in Xbox 360 News, Halo, Site News at 3:59 pm by UNSCleric

I’m having a deja-vu writing this entry, you know why?  Cause I confirmed this 18 days ago, and was blasted across the entire Internet.  Trolls came from all sides to call me a diluted fanboy, conspiracy theorist, “a ****ing idiot”, and many other things that never even saw the light of day on my comments because they were blocked due to them being nothing but curses.  As usual, the e-mail box was full of hate mail and death threats, my favorite.  A lot of other people attacked my story and me because of the format of this site.  I guess because I don’t have ads plastered all over every page that I don’t seem credible to some.

Here’s the thing when it comes to gaming news and any other form of news.  The main stream news is not going to give you every piece of news, because they either don’t know it themselves, or don’t want you to know it.  Big, lethargic news sites are a dying breed, and blogs are now the rising stat for the latest, breaking news.  Individual people, who have a passion for what they are doing, and aren’t being paid to do what they do, are going to be the best at telling the truth, and analyzing a situation, and that is exactly what I did.  I heard Jeff Bell’s comment, I read into it, I checked out Jeff Bell’s history, found out that he had had a big mouth before, and wrote the article.  This all took about an hour.  Since then, the “debate” has raged on that Halo 3 wouldn’t even have any online co-op at all, and you know why?

A few days after my article hit the front page of Digg.com, an EGM article about Halo 3 leaked online, and they talked about how online co-op isn’t in the game right now and that they’re having trouble with it.  You might think that blows my “confirmed” story out of the water huh?  Not quite, due to the EGM article and report being nearly two months old, but it’s just hitting the customers now.

So here’s the deal, if you guys want the latest (true) news, come to sites like this one, or Unscripted360.com, Xbox360Fanboy.com, Joystiq.com, etc.  If you want outdated news, with a slant to whoever paid them the most attention and money that month, go with an IGN, GameSpot, or two-month-old news magazines.

So for the last three weeks, I have come online to find my credibility and reputation slammed hundreds of times because of a two month old article supposedly debunked me, it’s almost comical.  I never said much about it until now, because I knew that I would soon be vindicated, and when I heard the guys from Bungie were heading over to Amsterdam for a Halo 3 hype event, I figured that that is when justice would be served.

I’m not trying to rub it in people’s faces, I just wish, like I said earlier today, that the pointless debates on obvious things would end.  Remember the Assassin’s Creed debate, the F.E.A.R. debate, the Devil May Cry debate, the Crysis debate, and now the (stillongoing MGS4 debate.  It’s time to open your eyes and stop hitting your head against the wall in ignorance every time the truth hits you.

Here’s the article from Joystiq.com on the re-confirmation of co-op:

Speaking at a Microsoft press conference in Amsterdam earlier today, Bungie has confirmed, once and for all, that Halo 3 will feature two to four player online co-operative play over Xbox Live. This news comes after months of rumors and slip-ups, but is extremely appreciated nonetheless.

Details are extremely sparse at the moment (chugging a Mountain Dew while snowboarding with a live bear extreme) but we can tell you this: we have Bungie’s word. Bungie will be issuing an update themselves on this matter over at their website later today, so be patient and we’ll have further information for you as soon as it rolls in.

I’d also like to thank the majority of you that didn’t condemn my article and believed in it.  For those of you who still have a malfunctioning common-sense, Bungie.net will be updated soon with more details on the co-op in Halo 3.

Update: Bungie has posted the update, and as I also theorized, the other three players in the co-op will be Elites.

Crysis will be on Xbox 360

Posted in Xbox 360 News at 1:28 pm by UNSCleric

For over a year now, people with common sense have had to argue with PC-elitists/anti-Xbox people over the fact that Crysis will be coming to the Xbox 360.

1-15-07 -

In other news, more news about Crysis for the Xbox 360 have found its way online.  As I (and probably many of you) did with Counter-Strike, Half-Life 2, F.E.A.R., and many other games, I have been arguing that Crysis, like those games, will come to the Xbox brand, and not be PC exclusives.  As usual, there are PC elitists, among other people, who continue to deny that these games will ever come to the console, and will continue to tell you “it’s impossible”.  I guess we all did “the impossible” last November when we played F.E.A.R. on our Xbox 360’s, or when we’ll play Half-Life 2 this summer on the Xbox 360 (it was also released on the original Xbox in 2005), we’ll be doing “the impossible” again.

Developers make games for profit, not just for fun.  There’s just simply no reason to stay exclusive these days unless you’re being paid off by a certain console maker, or if you have a personal problem working on or with a certain system.  This is the reason most top PC games will come to the Xbox 360, especially with XNA dev tools being mainstream now, and this is also the reason that most, if not all, non-first party PS3 “exclusive” titles will make their way to the Xbox 360.  I talk about this more in my “Konami MGS4 Damage Control” entry a few weeks ago.

That brings us to today, where the CEO of Crytek, developers of Crysis, has now said that Crysis is possible on the Xbox 360, and how that’s always been the case.

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has now gone on record saying that “Crysis could be on the 360 or PS3.” Yerli goes on to say that bringing Crysis to consoles would require optimization and, furthermore, this has always been the stance of Crytek

After saying that, he of course goes on to say there are no plans to bring it to the consoles right now.  This is kind of like how EA didn’t have plans to bring Burnout Revenge to the Xbox 360 when their Xbox version was just about to release, but then suddenly a couple months later, the Xbox 360 version was announced and came out 3 months later.  EA is also involved in denying Crysis’ console existence, using the same vague words as they have done every other time.

After that, we reported about a specially designed version of Crysis for Xbox 360 that wouldn’t really be a port at all. It should come as no shock that EA later denied that such a project existed, claiming that it was a “miscommunication.”

With all the news and information to read and report on these days, it gets old having the same arguments and debates in the same way about the same things.  This is exactly like the MGS4 issue, and how people say it’s not coming to Xbox 360 when it is obvious to anyone with a brain that it is.

EA: ‘All Pro Football Cannot Continue’

Posted in Xbox 360 News at 10:23 pm by UNSCleric

Joystiq.com - 7/27/07

EA CEO John Riccitiello stated during a shareholder call that EA needs to make sure that 2K’s All-Pro Football 2K8 is “not repeatable.” Riccitiello specifically pointed out 2K Sports’ re-emerged football franchise which has been missing since EA purchased exclusive rights to the NFL and current players in 2005.

Riccitiello specifically says that Take-Two is a “competitor” and when they launch a football game “you want to make sure that [it] ends up being a blip and is not repeatable, because we like to defend our franchises aggressively.” We’re sure EA can dig deep into their coffers to stop 2K if they wanted to, especially considering they could afford to make Peter Moore the head of EA Sports. The only issue we have is: Wouldn’t it be nice if EA actually focused on improving Madden and defeating 2K on the field of consumer satisfaction?

Joystiq summed up my thoughts with that last line there.  What do you think of EA’s continued monopoly and infection-like business tactics?

Xbox Live Points Sale (Update)

Posted in Xbox 360 News at 8:38 pm by UNSCleric

I meant to post about this a week ago today when the story first broke over on the CAG forums, but I forgot all about it until today when it suddenly hit the mainstream sites a week later.

Starting Sunday at Circuit City, you can save $20 with the purchase of any 2 Xbox Live accessories $19.99 & up, with the 1600 point cards included.  Instead of 80 points = 1 dollar, they now would only cost you 160 would = 1 dollar.  I have personally already picked up six cards, with plans to pick up some more throughout the week at Circuit City and possibly other stores via price-matching.  Remember, you can go buy your cards now and then price-match them once the sale goes live on Sunday.  It’s time to stock up.

Update: I was able to price-match six more cards at a single Best Buy this afternoon, and was also able to price adjust the other six recently bought cards at Circuit City (had to do it with two different Circuit City’s though.)  Price matching was hit or miss at Best Buys, cause I had one of the rwo deny me, but it will obviously work with a little bit of luck.

Condemned 2: Censored

Posted in Xbox 360 News at 3:36 pm by UNSCleric

America, the land of the free speech zones, secret White House documents, and now overbearing censorship of artistic outlets.

When discussing the banning of Manhunt 2, and the eventual censoring of it, Richard Mitchell of X3F has this to say about Condemned 2 being censored.

It looks like this occurrence is already affecting the rest of the industry, as Condemned 2 producer, Constantine Hantzopoulos, reveals to CVG. According to Hantzopoulos, the Condemned 2 team is cutting certain content from the game in order to avoid an AO rating. As examples, he states that the ability to put an enemies head in a vice has been cut, as have several decapitations. Judging from Hantzopoulos’ comments, other environmental attacks, like putting someone’s head through a TV, may be cut as well. Condemned 2: Bloodshot, whatever its final state may be, is expected to arrive early next year.

So next February, we will all get the chance to play a shell of the game the developers wanted to create.  I actually agree with the censorship, I think it would be terrible to have to turn on my Xbox 360 and be able to kill fictional monsters in a gruesome way, I don’t know what I would do if I saw violence on my TV.  Hopefully this game never even gets shipped and it’ll all give us more time to turn on the news and reflect on the perfect, non-violent world we must live in.

Silicon Knights Sues Epic Games

Posted in Xbox 360 News at 2:24 am by UNSCleric

I’m not a fan of Epic Games.  I’ve actually been thinking over an article I’m about to write about them after recent events, but this article just caught my eye, and I already can say I am 100% behind Silicon Knights in the fight.  The people in-charge over at Epic seem to be very arrogant, stubborn people, and the attitude Silicon Knights says they have had to deal with for over a year seems to be right in line with what I’ve seen from Epic.

Too Human developer takes Unreal Engine creators to court, saying they broke contracts with licensing partners in order to give Gears of War a head start on the competition.

According to the suit, Epic “has caused Silicon Knights to experience considerable losses and ultimately has forced Silicon Knights to spend its limited time and resources on building its own game engine rather than in developing its video game.” It goes on to say that instead of supporting its licensing partners, Epic has used its fees to develop its own competing products “while simultaneously sabotaging efforts by Silicon Knights and others to develop their own video games.”

Silicon Knights claims it received a working Xbox 360 build of the engine a year after Microsoft’s system commercially released. Even then, the developer claims it was not told how to implement the code into its development efforts, and that if they rigged the engine themselves in order to make it work, Epic would not support the altered product. As for the PlayStation 3 version of the engine, Silicon Knights said it is still waiting to receive it, even though the agreement called for it to be delivered in February.

The studio also attributes the delay of Too Human from its 2006 release date to Epic, saying it “faced pressure from its publishing partners to nonetheless move forward with development of its games, and with respect to one of those partners (Microsoft), to complete its game as early as possible in 2007.” That alone has cost the company millions in labor and potential profit, according to the suit.

As for Epic, the suit claims the company was perfectly able to make a workable version of Unreal Engine 3 for E3 2006 to show off its own Gears of War, but withheld the technology from its partners for its own advantage. When pressed for the updates and engine tweaks that allowed Gears of War to run well, Silicon Knights says it was told those updates were “game specific” enhancements not covered by the agreement, as opposed to an “engine level” update that would be covered.

Silicon Knights claims those partners were stuck with an Xbox 360 engine that was unable to handle multicore processing, subject to long load times, inefficient memory usage, and crippling slow down. The developer further claims that Epic would ignore its requests to correct those problems unless doing so would also benefit the development of Gears of War. It also said Epic consistently advised licensees to code things like particle effects in one manner, while at the same time using a completely contradictory method in Gears of War.

The suit accuses Epic of a number of misdeeds, including fraud, negligent misrepresentation, intentional interference with contractual obligations, breach of warranty, and unjust enrichment. Silicon Knights is seeking to have the contract between itself and Epic Games declared null and void and be refunded all of the money it spent to license Unreal Engine 3. The developer also wants to be awarded punitive damages for the offenses it alleges Epic committed. Finally, the studio is asking that Epic be forced to surrender all profits garnered by Gears of War as a result of misconduct.

Silicon Knights president and founder Denis Dyack released a statement about the suit, saying, “Our strong preference is to focus on making games, not be in court. Unfortunately though, as explained in our lawsuit, we have had extensive problems with the Unreal Engine 3 that Epic has been unwilling or unable to rectify. For more than a year, we have been trying to reach an agreement with Epic to resolve these issues without resorting to litigation, but were unable to come to reasonable terms with Epic. … No doubt Gears is a fun and phenomenally successful game, but as we alleged in our complaint against them, we strongly believe that from the perspective of someone waiting for a game engine that Epic promised it would deliver almost two years ago, it seems pretty clear that Gears was built on the backs of the Unreal Engine licensees. We certainly stand by our allegations in the lawsuit that instead of using our licensing fees to develop and support the Unreal Engine 3, Epic used that money to build Gears.”

Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel

Posted in Xbox 360 News at 12:56 am by UNSCleric

Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel

So I finally got my hands on one a couple days ago.  I had been wanting to try it out since it came out, but due to worries that I wouldn’t have a good setup for it (due to not having a table of any kind that I could dock in onto, I procrastinated.

The thing that pushed me into finally purchasing one was the addiction that is Forza 2.  I was having a blast with the game with the controller, but the more I played, the more the realism of the game sucked me in, and the wheel and pedals starting feeling like a must-have accessory to evolve my next-gen racing experience.

Racing has never felt so real! Hold on tight as you hug corner after corner, skid through the sand, or trade paint with rival cars fighting for position—the wireless wheel simulates all the resistance and force, immersing you in a relentless and unparalleled racing experience. Featuring sleek design and cutting edge technology like dual Rumble motors and powerful Force Feedback, the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel is a masterpiece of form and function.

I use the wheel in my lap, which is something I was worried wouldn’t work out too well ever since I first saw the wheel first announced.  The wheel itself though is a hard, heavy, metal, it’s one of the most quality-feeling (and looking) gaming accessories I have ever seen.  Using the wheel in your lap is a perfectly comfortable experience, but if you could mount it to a table, I’m sure it would give you a bit more of a realistic feel, but I personally like being able to have the wheel move around with me as I re-adjust back in my chair.

The wheel, as you may know, comes with a copy of Project Gotham Racing 3, which also utilizes the wheel’s excellent full force-feedback function, as does Forza 2, DiRT, Test Drive Unlimited, and the Need for Speed games.

The force-feedback is done very well from what I have experienced.  In Forza 2, when you go off the track for example, the wheel is going to fight you hard.  It shakes and bumps all over, and it’s not just a lame vibration function that is going on either, it’s truly making you put some effort into getting the wheel and tires the direction you want them.  If you have surround sound, the only thing missing from a true racing experience with this wheel is the actual jolts in your car when you slam into something, but that’s just not possible at this point in time, at least not without a several thousand dollar setup.

Forza 2 is the only game I have tested with this wheel so far, but I should be getting my hands on DiRT this weekend, which should allow for a bit more unrestrained driving compared to the simulation-feel of Forza 2.  If you’re considering picking up this wheel, I definitely say go for it if you’re going to be playing or buying racing games any time within the next 2 or 3 years.  This wheel is going to be compatible for years to come, and most likely with third Xbox system, so it’ll definitely hold its value.

Halo 3 and The Art of the Telephone Game

Posted in Halo at 9:06 pm by UNSCleric

This article is dedicated to all of those who are using the newly leaked EGM article to try and slam my “Halo 3 Co-Op Confirmed” article (which has surpassed 1,000 diggs).  The hype artists out there are now screaming (and crying) that the new EGM article confirms Halo 3 won’t have online co-op and that myself, Jeff Bell, and others are wrong.  This is not true.  First of all, the EGM article, and EGM’s visit to Bungie, happened over a month ago, a lot has changed since then.

Secondly, my article never stated that the co-op in Halo 3 would be online (although I believe it will be).  The reason for my original article was due to a throwaway comment said by Jeff Bell playing Halo 1 and 2 co-op with his son, and how with Halo 3, he’d now finally be able to play it all together with all three of his sons.

Then there’s this article, written by the guy who helped write the Halo 3 EGM cover story, here you go.

Halo 3 and The Art of the Telephone Game

So you obsessive Internet-using types have probably noticed, between poring over leaked scans of Harry Potter book seven, that certain information from the next issue of EGM has begun circulating the Internet. This is despite the fact that the next issue of EGM has not yet actually left the printer’s. The next issue of EGM will therefore be remembered as “The Deathly Hallows Issue.”

The Internet being the Internet, of course, word — that’s every word — spread far and wide the minute the scans went online. Having written half of the article currently being propagated across the world, I’ve been very interested to watch its spread. By “interested” I mean “frustrated,” and not just because I would have liked to have seen the fruits of my labor in person before it became yesterday’s news. Much more irritating is the way that people’s poor reading comprehension and hysterical assumptions have painted an inaccurate picture of the game with just enough credit to the original source to make it looked like the inaccuracies are our fault. And that is not cool.

The entire Internet has descended upon the EGM scans, buzzard-like, to carve themselves a little piece of the action/traffic. I accept that this is simply how things work now. We at 1UP sometimes partake of this shameful act ourselves! But look, Internet people, if you’re going to pick the bones of our cover story clean, please have some integrity about it. That means checking to make sure what you’re writing is actually correct. Yes, I know. Muckraking is easy traffic; sensationalize something and the hits just roll in. Fact-checking is time-consuming and difficult, too, and every second that you don’t have a story posted because you’re double-checking its accuracy is a second that someone else is getting Dugg up. But there’s a reason so many people have so little respect for bloggers, and crap like the OMG NO ONLINE CO-OP IN HALO 3 stories that have been filtering around for the past day is right at the top of the list.

The co-op element of EGM’s story seems to be the one thing that people are latching onto. Halo 3’s campaign mode won’t support online co-op gameplay, the article almost kind of seems to suggest according to a few summaries, making for headlines like “Halo 3 Co-Op Heads Offline.” Bummer, huh? After the awesome experiences we had with Gears of War and Crackdown, it really sucks that Bungie’s not putting online co-op into this game. Time to whip out clever photoshops that use “fail” as a noun! Maybe even some hilariously captioned cat photos that describe Bungie’s ineptitude with ironically poor grammar!

Except… Bungie hasn’t actually denied or ruled out online co-op in Halo 3. What the developers — Frank O’Connor in particular — did say is that they’re still working on it. They’re trying to surmount the technical challenges that are preventing co-op from being as polished as the rest of the game. They know people want it. They want to add it. But as of our interview with them, a month ago, it hadn’t come together yet in a satisfactory manner. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen, and in fact they’d like to make it happen. But they won’t include a half-baked implementation.

Personally, I suspect they’ll get the kinks worked out — and even if the game doesn’t ship with online co-op out of the box, that’s what updates are for. But that’s my speculation, which you shouldn’t confuse with facts. In this case, the facts are that Bungie wants to include online co-op and is working toward that end.

No one’s perfect — hell, I let a small factual error creep into the Halo 3 story, which Bungie seems determined to never ever let me live down — but it’s not hard to sort out the facts when you have our stolen text right there as a reference. All it takes is a little reading comprehension and the willingness not to rely on the Telephone Game as a source for news. You want facts, go find the source. Don’t rely on someone’s impressions of someone else’s write-up of an article that they read furtively before the scans were taken offline. That’s all it takes to elevate yourself from “slapdash dumbass blogger” to “aspiring journalist.”

But perhaps these amateurish hijinks are simply the way of the Internet now.

No X07 This Year

Posted in Xbox 360 News at 11:38 am by UNSCleric

For the  last few years, Microsoft’s “X0″ events have been essentially a second E3 for gamers, but with Microsoft being the only attendee.  There have been years in the past where the expo didn’t take place, and 2007 is going to be one of them.

Aaron Greenberg, Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Group Product Manager, confirmed that there will be no X07 taking place this year. Instead he said Microsoft will have to find other ways to release their big surprises such as dashboard updates and so on later this year. You can hear him confirm this on the newest Squad XP Podcast. Also he confirms that Pixar Movies and Pirates of the Caribbean will be finding their way on the Video Marketplace later this year.

Peter Moore Resigns From Microsoft, Goes To EA Sports

Posted in Xbox 360 News at 4:28 pm by UNSCleric

“I leave here with sadness in my heart.”

Microsoft Corp. today announced that Don Mattrick, a former president at Electronic Arts Inc. (EA), will lead the Interactive Entertainment Business (IEB), which includes overseeing the Xbox® and Games for Windows® businesses. Peter Moore, who currently serves as corporate vice president of IEB, has decided to move his family back to the Bay Area for personal reasons and has secured another opportunity in the video games industry.

Unbelievable.  I almost commented last week that the Microsoft Press Conference leaned way too much on EA presentations and games, and now I see why it was that way.  Putting the former President of EA Games, one of the most loathed companies in the gaming industry, in charge of your console brand is not a good idea either.

“Peter has contributed enormously to the games business since joining Microsoft in 2003 and we are sad to see him go,” said Robbie Bach, president of Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. “Since that time, he presided over the global launch of the Xbox 360™, spearheaded a revitalized and rebranded Games for Windows business, and helped steer the console’s ascent.”

Moore has decided to return with his family to Northern California, where they lived until he took the position at Microsoft. Moore will remain at Microsoft to assist in the transition through August and will then return to the San Francisco Bay area.

“While Peter will certainly be missed, we are delighted to have one of the industry’s most talented and passionate veterans on board to lead the business,” Bach said. “Don is well-known and respected throughout the industry for his deep knowledge, technical expertise and management savvy. Under Don’s leadership, the games team is looking forward to embarking on our biggest holiday ever, with a wide-ranging roster of some of the most highly anticipated titles.”

Moore is responsible for establishing industry-shaking alliances, including alliances with industry giant Square Enix and legendary developers Hironobu Sakaguchi (Mistwalker), Yoshiki Okamoto (Game Republic) and Tetsuya Mizuguchi (Q Entertainment), and bringing publishing powerhouse Electronic Arts Inc. onto the Xbox Live™ global video games online service.

Moore joined Microsoft in January 2003, bringing with him more than 20 years of experience and leadership in consumer businesses. Most recently, Moore was president and COO of SEGA of America, where he was responsible for overseeing SEGA’s video game business in North America. Moore played a pivotal role in the company’s decision to change its business strategy to become a platform-agnostic software publisher. At SEGA, Moore also served as senior vice president, a position in which he was responsible for all marketing initiatives, including the launch of SEGA Dreamcast.

It’s a sad day for the Xbox brand, Peter Moore was the best guy they had.  The only good thing about all of this is that maybe he can turn EA Games around, and make them a quality company once again.  Peter Moore will become the new president of EA’s sports division.

Peter Moore to Resign from Microsoft

Major Nelson is on his way to conduct one final interview with Peter Moore this afternoon, look for that later today over on his site.

Show has been posted - Peter Moore Says Goodbye
