Sony hopes to resolve PS3 “shortages” by May
Joystiq.com - 2/28/06

Apparently all the PS3s you see in stock don’t really exist. Perhaps they’re just empty display boxes, or Sony is just really quick to replace huge piles of the console; they sell out fast and get restocked even faster. But don’t worry, you should be able to find a PS3 in a few months, says Sony chief executive Jack Tretton. “April or May is when we feel like we’re going to catch up to demand and have product fully in stock across North America and stay there.”

Tretton continued by telling Reuters that the console was still out of stock in “some areas” and that the, ahem, shortages were “a testament to the fact that we’ve been able to manufacture and ship units on a greater pace than any previous console.” Since we seemingly live in make-believe land, let’s pretend Sony didn’t even say this.

Sony’s Phil Harrison also had some more dumb stuff to say a couple days ago:

Talk to the people who run GameStop, talk to the people who run BestBuy, and they’ll tell you that the demand is unprecedented and that they give us kudos for managing to keep a very sophisticated supply chain moving.

More on that here.  There’s also news that Sony doesn’t plan to cut the price of the PS3 for another two years.  That must work out good for Sony, take out things that cost money, but still charge the same outrageous price (especially overseas). My three month old post on PS3 problems still gets comments to this day as well, with people reporting more problems every week, so that’s another fun thing to throw into the PS3 nightmare the gaming industry is currently having to endure.

This may be some of the funniest quotes I have ever read. For of all there is no PS3 shortage, at least where I live. The Wii shortage on the other hand should be questioned. How can I not go into a store THREE months after launch and pick up a system? The Wii is old technology. Period. It shouldn’t be that hard to keep them in stock, even with its popularity…

Maybe by being “fully stocked” they mean “having 10 PS3 systems to choose from in every store instead of just the 2 or 3 I always see”. Definately looking forward to this exciting event.

I was in Blacksburg, VA the other day, car shopping for my sister. I see a Gamestop, so I go in there and just browse around. I got up to the two guys at the cash register and say “Just out of curiosity, do you have any PS3’s in stock?”. One guy said “Yes”, then the other said “Plenty, both the 20 GB and the 60GB”. Now, Balcksburg is a failry large city, and for a place that busy to have “Plenty” of PS3’s left, that makes this post that much funnier.

I live in Quad Cities Area of Iowa which is fairly large including the surrounding towns and we see alot of these signs up at the local gamestops and eb games.. I remember going to Wal-Mart on christmas eve to pick up some snacks and such with my husband. We were in there for about an hour and they were annoucing over the speakers about every 10 mins that they had PS3’s for sale to go to electronics if you are interested.. I

    was like what the heck??

the store where i work at we sell out wii’s more than anything else, when we get a ps3 in they sit in the case for a few days, sometimes they stay for a week before they are sold, and we get about 4 or so a month

yup they sure are great at selling and shipping fast

I’m totally with you on this one. well, 90%. With Phil Harrison’s interviews surrounding dice where they refused to say anything good about what microsoft or even nintendo has done this generation…they turned a “could you learn anything from your competitors” question into a “no, but they could learn from us becasue the PS3 launch has gone samshingly well” And their inability to admit that maybe demand isn’t what they expected (would it be so hard for them to say “yeah, systems aren’t selling the way we want but it will turn around as we get some top notch games”) I’m at a point were even if money was no object I would not buy a PS3 just to teach them a lesson. It’s like their market strategy is taken from “1984″, and they only know how to speak in double speak.

The part I disagree with is the last bit about the troubles with the PS3. There are obvioulsy probelms as there are with any console luanch, but I think any objective observer would say the PS3 luanch systems have performed better than 360 luanch systems. Cleric find me one reliable source that says differently. And when you can’t, don’t claim its because of some kind of conspiracy. EGM runs a cover with the PS3 splashed with tomatoes, Time (or newsweek) called it a bust, CNET said its a bust too, so I don’t think you can claim that people are reluctant to rip on Sony and the PS3.
