Halo 3 Alpha: Leaked

This news broke late last night, when several pictures and videos were uploaded to the Internet of the Halo 3 multiplayer (Alpha version).  At the time I got the news, everything had been taken down, and for some reason, nobody seemed to have thought of saving the pictures or videos.  This morning, the videos and pictures have found their way back online.

Videos:

Pictures removed at Microsoft’s request.  Videos are provided by GameTrailers.com

Hopefully the next time Microsoft gives the Alpha build to someone who clearly can’t read the download screen, the person will have a camera above 2 mega-pixels…

Boy the video was bad. I couldn’t see much of what was going on… but that isn’t going to deter my excitement for this game, I don’t know if there is anything that will. MONGOOSE FTW!!1!!1one!

  2. ShiftTab Says:

yeah when you meant horrid… those videos were pretty bad… couldn’t tell any detail except for the primary weapons. Let just hope someone doesn’t use a camera video phone next time…

  3. UNSCleric Says:

Looks like Microsoft and Bungie aren’t too happy about these being online…they’re going around asking people to take down the materials having YouTube pull the videos, etc.. Guess what, this wouldn’t happen if they weren’t doing PUBLIC Alpha/Best testing on the game…common sense comes into play here.

I still think the beta test thing is stupid, but trying to crack down on videos of the builds you openly put out there is even worse. There’s three options.

1.) Keep it behind closed doors (what a concept!)
2.) Do the tests and expect the leaked videos and the want for them.
3.) Let everyone play the test builds.

This is like feeding one half of a starving third world country and being shocked and angry that the other half wants some of the food too.

You fricken nerd. You ever stopped to think that maybe they don’t want detractors from finding things out about the game that could jeopardize the release? Your like a little kid that can’t wait for your mom to finish baking a cake and have to look into the oven and ruin it by keeping it from rising. If you were a true supporter of Microsoft and Bungie, you would let them complete the game and get it ready for release so they concentrate on bringing the best product possible instead of having to worry about keeping sectrets secret. What if one of unauthorized leaks reveals the ending or some other important storyline information, then your stupid little website that you have poured so much time and energy into would all be for not. let them do their jobs so that they can give you what you want so bad that you dream about it at night.

  5. UNSCleric Says:

If it were up to me, I wouldn’t have them show a single thing of the game outside of the announcement trailer and that CGI trailer with the flashback scene.  I have always been “against” the idea of the public beta test, because I knew things like these would get leaked, and it sucks to have the first time seeing Halo 3 be some crappy cell phone video.  I would rather see everything for the first time the night I buy it and get home.  That is the reason I never played a single Xbox 360 demo before the system came out, because I wanted the first time I played it to be my own system, where I could actually experience the system and games the way the creators intended.

Also, the story or ending can’t get spoiled, the only thing they are testing is multi-player, and they’re picking and choosing who can play. To have them getting all mad because people are leaking the multi-player footage is ridiculous. WTF do they expect? I would rather they keep it completely behind doors until it’s totally done. I can wait as long as it takes, I’ve already waited years like everyone else. What to don’t like is this “well these people get to play it, and the rest of you don’t” BS. I don’t want to play some beta build of the game either, I just want the final game, but they’re doing this public beta test to try and draw out the hype for the game.

Thanks for checking out the site though. :)

Its the same as video taping a movie in a theatre and posting it online. MS has the right to request its removal from the web. MS shouldn’t be surprised when someone posts it online and we shouldn’t be surprised when they requests its deletion…

  7. Cokeguy Says:

So, you think that the only reason that they Beta test is to get nerds talking about the game. You also believe that they should do all testing in house, with the people that developed the game, don’t you think they would be a little bit bias towards their own work? and don’t you think that the average gamer, pushes what a game can do a little more than someone who is going abou it saying it should do this here and just kinda check that it’s doing what they planned it to do. I know when I was a little kid and played a lot of video games I always tried to try different things, that the developer probably would have never thought of, and I would find gliches and bugs all the time some that you could use to your advantage and some that just ruined the game all together.
You said that didn’t want the first images you saw of Halo 3 being some cell phone pics but you certainly got bummed out when you first went to look for them and they were gone. Let me fill in your answer here, ” I just felt that I had a responsibilty to show my veiwers of my site the most up to date information.” Right? It would have shown how much of a fan you are and how much you want your Halo 3 cherry popped on your own system to have not put the pictures up and provided a link to the pictures while explaining, that while you understand that some people just can’t wait to see the game, that you would take the high road and wait for the release. Now your just kinda like the girl that has a reputation for going down on every guy she meets, but not letting any of them into her pants, so she can still say she’s a virgin.

I wish people who didn’t know what they wanted to say, let alone know what they were talking about would just stay quiet.

Cleric’s point was that if MS didn’t want the game/footage leaked, then they should never have done a *public* beta/alpha. Most beta testing goes on in house by independent folks who are monitored and sign NDAs.

All you have done is misread everything and form some crazy opinion about nothing.

  9. UNSCleric Says:

Exactly. In-house testing doesn’t mean it’s just the developers that do the testing. They bring in casual gamers, hardcore gamers, non-gamers, everybody, to test the game out. When they do it this way, there is unbiased testing without the risk of some guy recording it with some crappy camera at home. I’m surprised we haven’t seen more leaks already. The test numbers on the screen would give away who it is doing it, but you could edit that out.

I don’t think the main reason for these public tests coming up is to check weapon balance or any of that. I think it is to try and find problems like super-jumping and ghosting, two problems that sprang up after millions of people hit Halo 2. Ghosting was fixable, and super-jumping isn’t that big of a deal.

Bungie has already said they have developed the game so that they can easily change things internally after the game is on shelves, and bring out the updates/fixes over Live, so I don’t really understand why they’re going to allow millions to play the multiplayer before the game even comes out.

I think this whole beta idea was thought up by MS when they realized Halo 3 wouldn’t be done by spring, which they believed would be when the PS3 would finally be readily available and would be a threat. I don’t think MS counted on the PS3 botching and being in-stores everywhere by mid-December. Some stores have over 60 PS3s sitting there on shelves in a new survey.

I think the beta was designed to try and steer people away from buying a PS3, but it’s going to do now is annoy Bungie and MS because people will be recording footage, and it’s also going to effectively spoil a lot of people for when the actual game comes out. I’m going to play a few hours of the Halo 3 beta for however long it’s out until the actual game comes out, but I won’t be playing it constantly. I want to wait until it’s the actual game, and I also want to give time to all of the other amazing games coming out this year…not to mention there’s those new Halo 2 maps coming out, which seem very out of place… You’d think Microsoft would be trying to get people to stop playing Halo 2 and start buying Xbox 360 games..

  10. Matt (YourExWife) Says:

They have to have a 360 to play 360 games, bud! :)

This way, they can get the Halo 2 freaks to buy 360s for the maps, then the barrier between them buying 360 games for their new system is that much smaller.

  11. SH1SNO Says:

With that comes the nice benefit that modchips for the 360 are not widely available at this point (I haven’t kept up with the progress real closely, but any new mods are most definately not mainstream). Nice for the players, and also gives Bungie/MS a heads up if some moron does discover a way to screw with the 360 maps. Keeping my fingers crossed that this doesn’t happen for a long time…

  12. dpcough Says:

It would make sense for you to remove it but Gametrailers posted it, I got rid of it on mine when I saw Bungie asking for people to take it down but then I saw it everywhere and realized it really didn’t matter :).

  13. Matt (YourExWife) Says:

There are currently no mod chips, but they are in the design phase. But it’s slow going because things are a bit more complicated and whatnot this time around. About the most you can do is flash your drive to play burned games.

  14. Microsoft Confidential Says:

    Hi,
We found on your site some files and those ones would be under investigation,
So, please erase the content and let us know when the information will be not longer available.

    Thanks in advance.

  15. UNSCleric Says:

Gametrailers.com are providing the video, not me. You should contact them.

  16. Matt (YourExWife) Says:

“Microsoft Confidential” huh? How come no files are mentioned specifically? Why is there a big run-on sentence there? Why is your grammar the exact opposite of good? Why do you have simple spelling mistakes? Biggest of all, why aren’t you contacting Cleric by some more official means, aka email, etc.? What kind of company posts warnings in the comments section of a site?

Also, I never knew it was against the law to link to offsite files that you don’t actually have. Has the law changed? That’s like saying if I put a link to http://btjunkie.org on my site, then I’m responsible for anything that they do?

Sorry, seemingly fake Microsoft representative with no respect for the English language or knowledge of the law, but you have to try harder than that.

  17. UNSCleric Says:

He’s real, I had a feeling he was. I google’d his name and he is with Microsoft Security in Mexico, which is where I figured the leak came from due to the language in the background of the video. Further discussion has occurred away from this comment section too. It’ll be interesting to see if GameTrailers keeps the videos up or not.

  18. Matt (YourExWife) Says:

That’s fine, I was just observing. Still don’t get how they’re suprised by this.

  19. UNSCleric Says:

I agree with what you said though, it didn’t seem very believable from what he typed. I could see his IP and e-mail address and all that, that’s what made me believe it even before I did a little research. :) Everybody say hi to Microsoft! They’re watching.

  20. Greg Says:

Hi MS! Please explain to your public-facing reps that “those ones” is some nasty-ass grammar.

Matt (great gamertag- my buddy is ALargeWoman) and Cleric- excellent, informed and diplomatic smack-down of Cokeguy. That dude needs to stop field stripping his HK and get some vitamin D and human interaction.

FWIW- I’m on the fence about the public beta program. The “hype” point is a good one Cleric.
