Gears of War Trilogy & Sony Launch #’s

Microsoft’s Jeff Bell has let it slip in a recent interview that Gears of War will end up being a trilogy.

“The goal of the ad (”Mad World”) is to establish Marcus Fenix as the hero of the Gears of War trilogy,” Jeff Bell, Microsoft Corporate VP of Global Marketing, Interactive Entertainment Business

Also, Joystiq has posted an article discussing how Sony failed to provide the 400,000 units for launch that it had said it would have, and are still saying they did.  A couple months ago when Sony cut its numbers from 4 million to 2 millions, and then again down to 400,000, I always said that even 400,000 is a lie and that it would be closer to 200,000.  I’m not bringing this up to show that I was right, but to show you that you too can predict the future when it comes to Sony!

You take whatever number they give you, and you cut it in half and you have the truth.   Take the number of PS2s that are supposedly in homes.  Sony says 110 million, the real number is around 60 million, with the other half being recycled plastic by now.  Analysts now say Sony maybe hit 200,000 at launch, and if they are below that, they will struggle to hit the 200,000 mark by the end of the year.

One analyst went on to say,

“If there is a substitution, it would be more for the Xbox 360,” Mitchell said. “Demand for PS3 is from hard-core gamers, who wouldn’t opt for a Wii. It’s not an alternative to PS3.”

This kind of situation is the reason Microsoft’s stock rating was raised from neutral to outperform recently.

Also, don’t forget that the Video Marketplace launches tomorrow for the United States!  For the announcement entry on that, click here.  More news on that tomorrow.

I’m glad thier will be a seconds and thrid gears of war. Even though i was pretty sure there was going to be at least a second one considering what happened at the end. I’m also interested to see what they can do with the video marketplace.

  2. UNSCleric.com » Epic comments on Gears of War trilogy rumors Says:

[...] After Microsoft Corporate VP of Global Marketing Jeff Bell let it slip that Gears of War will be a trilogy in an interview, Epic’s Mark Rein has commented on it in their official forums: Gears is a trilogy? If we can keep making quality games that fans obviously then why would we have to stop at three? I don’t see the Metal Gear Solid, Mario, Grand Theft Auto or Final Fantasy series (among others) stopping at three and they’re still delivering compelling entertainment content that’s easily worth the money (see Unreal Tournament as well). There’s definitely, as many of you have pointed out, a lot more to learn about what’s really happening on the plant Sera and in the lives of the members of Delta Squad. In the mean time we’re working hard to support Gears of War (the first one) and come up with some great enhancements you’ll hopefully see before too long. We’re not ready to provide any details yet but I assure you we’re on the job. [...]
