PS3 Delayed in Europe

Another day, another Sony lie. This day we have more than one actually with the news of not only PS3 being delayed in the second biggest gaming market in the world, but also confirmed launch allocation numbers.

For months Sony has said again and again they will ship 4 million by the end of the year, and every single time I have reported it and said it’s a lie. Today, Sony finally admitted they have been lying, and now the launch numbers for the PS3 are now 400,000 in USA & 100,000 in Japan. No more supposed worldwide launch for the PS3, which will help the Xbox 360 more than anything else could have over in Europe. For reference, here is the “Quote of the Week” from two weeks ago where I talked about and predicted this:

In last week’s Quote of the Week, I posted an interview where Kaz Hirai says both the PS3 has yet to begin manufacturing, and will only have 2 million by the end of the year worldwide. Sony has now been doing damage control for the last week and now say this:

“SCE has not changed its shipment schedule and is still on target to ship 2 million by launch window, 4 million by the end of this year, and 6 million by the end of FY 06,”

Now this is just a blatant lie. They’re now saying 6 million by next April. This is the same company who launched the much-easier to produce PS2 with less than 300,000 units. With the PS3, they’re trying to shove the hardware into a case seemingly too small (See this week’s Picture of the Week) and they’re dealing with several new, mostly untested technologies. I also have a feeling that quality control is not high on the list here, since as you saw this past week, both Apple and Dell had to recall several million laptops due only to a Sony battery in them that explodes and starts on fire.
Analysts have come out and said that Sony will have 3 million by April, which I believe to be accurate. They’ll have ~ 1 to 1.2 million by the end of the year, a majority of those going to Japan, and then by April maybe get three million and maybe actually have the system available in USA.

That is only one of many examples of what I (and many others) have been saying and predicting regarding Sony and their PS3 hype. It’s always nice when the truth is finally known and those who habitually lie are shown for what they are.

Great post, it keeps getting worse for Sony and better for Microsoft.

I’m glad somebody actually keeps track of Sony’s BS and publishes it for all to see. It would be great if they just hurried up and died out and took all of their crappy DRM with them. Of course, it would also be great if a reputable company could take their place to compete with Microsoft (Nintendo is just doing their own thing, so they don’t really count) to keep pricing/quality in check.

    Thanks for the comments guys.

Sadly, I think the only company that would take Sony’s place in the console market would be the other cancer of the gaming industry, EA. Look at everything EA owns, and everything they are trying to own, and also look at their online network and plans there. They already have a better central online service than Sony ever will, but that’s not saying much.

Also, for those who think Europe may not be a big market, look at these stats:

    PS2 sales as of November 2005 =

    North America = 40+ Million

    Europe = 37+ million

All of Asia combined (Japan included) = 22.22 Million

Good job alienating once again what is most likely going to be the biggest gaming market in the world this coming generation. It seems Microsoft and most likely Nintendo are the only ones that actually care about gamers enough to spend the money to do a worldwide launch.

Man it’s going to be crazy mass shortage is going to happen just like PS2.

I was just coming here to post about this. Glad you beat me to it; means you’re on the ball. =)

    Three strikes against Sony today:

    1. launch units cut in US/Japan

    2. launch date pushed back in Europe

    3. Apparently 1080p games on PS3 are near impossible. Take this report as you will. Just putting the report out there…

A more expensive console with less quantity than the 360 launch… This could net a higher value on eBay. I think I’m going camping.

    I know I am.

Thanks for the link K, I’ll give it a read. I already figured 1080p/60fps games on the PS3 were not going to happen, due to mostly Sony saying they would, so you automatically know it’s not true. :)
