Assassin’s Creed, PS3 HDMI, and Saints Row
Any of you who are regular readers of UNSCleric.com already knew that Assassin’s Creed was coming to Xbox 360 since May of this year, but Ubisoft has finally announced it today. I didn’t even want to report on this, as I feel it’s old news by now, but it’s good to have some closure to the few entries I had on the past about this, here’s a couple:
Sony using Xbox 360 to demo Assassin’s Creed at E3
More Assassin’s Creed PS3/Xbox 360 Controversy
As you can see, Sony and Ubisoft tried to play damage control once sites like this began reporting the smoke and mirrors of Sony’s tactics, but the truth was revealed, and now they have finally admitted it. Another loss for Sony, didn’t see that coming.
In other news, it’s been confirmed that the $600 PS3 package will not come with an HDMI cord. If you don’t know a lot about HDTV, or if you haven’t read my article from last May where I summarize HDTV stuff, you may not know what HDMI even is. Basically, the one thing PS3 has over Xbox 360 is that it can supposedly do 1080p (which is a display resolution). Well, to do that, you need an HDMI cord (and port of course). So now, not only is Sony shoving their new Blu-Ray format down everyone’s throats (essentially making the PS3 $600 instead of $400 like it would be without Blu-Ray trojan horsed into it) but now they are not even supplying the cord that you need to even be able to enjoy the resolution they brag about non-stop.
The mindset behind this was obviously that most people don’t need an HDMI cord and wouldn’t use it, so it was cost effective for Sony not to include it with every PS3. Sony is EXACTLY right in thinking that, too bad they didn’t think about that when shoving that format on every PlayStation fan. Now if someone wants to play the next Metal Gear or Final Fantasy (the only two games the PS3 seems to have) they have to pay several hundred dollars because Sony says Blu-Ray is essential. So Sony apparently believes that enough people have and care about HDTV that they will pay the extra money for a PS3 w/ Blu-Ray, but they don’t believe it’s worth it to add in the essential HDMI cord with the package?
If that wasn’t dumb enough, don’t forget that the $500 version of the PS3 (which also has a Blu-Ray laser of course as well) doesn’t have an HDMI port, so it’s a permanently crippled Blu-Ray player, as it’ll never have the ability to do anything that Sony brags makes the PS3 superior to…everything, if you go by Sony hype. It’s fun to watch Sony, the cancer of the video game industry, trip over itself all the way until PS3’s launch.
In other news, a patch for some online issues in Saints Row will be coming soon. Some people are reporting some lag issues, and they will be fixed in an upcoming auto update.

agreed on the HDMI front…why include it when maybe 5% of homes have the ability to take advantage of it…all this blu ray etc…too much, too soon…it’ll matter in a few years…but definitely not now…1080p included..maybe 5% of homes or even TVs support it…
soon people will see.

I’d imagine that the number of homes that have 1080p input capable TVs isn’t even as high as 5%.

What really has me wondering is… if 1080p is the ONLY, TRUE HD resolution then why are ps3 games being targeted at 720p and no HDMI cable included with the system?
Strange strange stuff.

I wonder how much they will charge for the cable? It’s quite funny that you’d have to pay $600 ($1200 here in New Zealand) for a new console and then an extra $30-50(??) for the cable to be able to go HDMI…
Just as well they didn’t stick with all the HDMI Blu Ray copy protection stuff then…
