‘The Sphere’ Attacks Tonight
Tuesday, July 11, 2006 is the day that Earth becomes PREY.
Back on February 6th, I wrote my first entry on Prey, but it’s actually been in development since 1995.
The story of Prey centers on Tommy, a Cherokee garage mechanic, and his girlfriend Jen. Meanwhile, an invisible, gigantic Moon-sized alien ship called the, “Sphere†has begun floating in orbit around Earth, and suddenly Tommy and Jen are beamed to the ship, and the game begins.
The game looks to be a shooter in the Quake/Doom sense, rather than a Halo or Half-Life type FPS, but it looks to change it up a bit with a few unique things. The alien ship you are on is actually “living†so that means that some of the enemies come right out of the floor or wall, and the walls and doors react to your every movement.
The demo currently available on Xbox Live Marketplace does not accurately reflect what the real game will be like obviously. The textures and entire look of the game were lowered in resolution to keep the download on the small side when it comes to file size. The Prey demo was still the largest demo on Xbox Live Marketplace, weighing in at 1.17GB. 3D Realms has said the Xbox 360 and PC version are identical, down to every pixel.
The demo also does not show what the game will mostly be like, they were essentially training levels, showing you the very first few minutes of the story, and learning the controls as you encounter very few, easy enemies. In the full game, the story will accelerate, the enemy count and variation will accelerate, and the entire pace of the game will accelerate. The reason why we don’t see more demos for more games before launch is for this exact reason: People judge the demo as if it’s the final game, running on final code, which is a beyond ridiculous thing to do. That is why developers like Epic only had Gears of War playable behind closed doors at E3 2006, because they knew the average casual gamer would not grasp the game and how it plays in the rushed five minute play-through, and they’d come away confused and un-thrilled, which results in sub-par previews in the worthless videogame magazines, and biased websites out there.
The Sphere will make itself known to the world tonight, as Prey comes out in both regular, and Collector’s Edition versions. The CE version comes in a metal case, with 2-3 action figures, and The Art of Prey book, and is $69.99; the regular version is $59.99.
We Are Next.
(Here’s some pictures I found of the LE case.)

This game is so hot.
I’m picking up my reserved copy tomorrow.
BTW, I picked up BfME: II. It rocks. I highly recommend a purchase.

IGN gave it a 9.0 but said that 360 version is not as good-looking as the PC version. Either way it still looks great for a game in development before the Xbox 1 even existed…
