Microsoft Comments on Xbox 360 hacking rumors…

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006

As you may have noticed, this site will not be reporting on all the little updates hackers have been sending out to the internet relating to their pathetic campaign to hack the Xbox 360, so that they can play illegal games while not supporting the industry they supposedly enjoy.  I will be showing you the official Microsoft response of these rumors though, and here it is:

The core security system has not been broken. However, it is reported that the authentication protocol between the optical disc drive and the console may be attacked, which if accurate could allow people to play illegally copied games.  Our security team is aware of this and we are investigating potential solutions to this issue. The Xbox 360 platform was designed to be updated, and we are prepared to respond appropriately should any unauthorized activity be identified.

Everyone should keep in mind that Microsoft invests a great deal of time and effort to ensure that Xbox gamers enjoy the most powerful and exhilarating game experience available today. Genuine and unmodified Microsoft Xbox products provide gamers with the reliability, security, support and dynamic gaming experience that they expect.  Microsoft works with a large group of legitimate business partners to sell and service genuine Microsoft Xbox products. Microsoft does not authorize or support any products or companies that modify or change the Xbox console in any way.”

Microsoft Press Release

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

Microsoft Corp. today announced the broader availability of Xbox 360 consoles and provided details about the new games and entertainment experiences available to gamers this season.

Beginning this week, Microsoft will distribute two to three times the number of Xbox 360 consoles to the retail channel weekly. With component supplies in full production and third manufacturing partner Celestica Inc. now producing the next-generation console along with partners Wistron Corp. and Flextronics Corp., Microsoft is producing more Xbox 360 consoles than ever.

“Today we have turned a major corner
,” said Peter Moore, corporate vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business in the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. “With more consoles on their way to retail, 80 games available by June, and new content and experiences coming to Xbox Live® all the time, there has never been a better time to own an Xbox 360.”

Blockbuster Games on the Way

The Xbox 360 games portfolio expands this spring with new next-generation titles from leading developers and publishers that cater to every genre, age, skill level and budget. Gamers can choose from a range of truly next-generation games such as “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” (Bethesda Softworks/2K Games), an Xbox 360 console exclusive with beautiful next-generation graphics and a huge world to explore; “Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter” (Ubisoft Entertainment SA), the latest version of the successful Tom Clancy series that once again pushes the boundaries of multiplayer boundaries on Xbox Live; and “Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend” (Eidos Interactive Ltd.), the next-generation debut of the very popular Lara Croft series.

In addition, new titles are coming to Xbox Live Arcade all the time, including “Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting,” “Uno” and the free full version of “Texas Hold ‘Em Poker” by Riverbelle. Great titles that gamers can expect this season include these:

  • “2006 FIFA World CupT” (EA SPORTS)
  • “Battlefield 2: Modern Combat” (Electronic Arts Inc.)
  • “Blazing Angels” (Ubisoft)
  • “Burnout Revenge” (Electronic Arts)
  • “Dynasty Warriors® 5 Empires” (KOEI)
  • “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” (Bethesda Softworks/2K Games)
  • “Far Cry Instincts Predator” (Ubisoft)
  • “FINAL FANTASY® XI” (Square Enix Inc.)
  • “Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter” (Ubisoft)
  • “Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend” (Eidos)
  • “Major League Baseball 2K6″ (2K Sports)
  • “The OutfitT” (THQ)
  • “Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis” (Rockstar Games)
  • “Rumble Roses XXT” (Konami)
  • “Top Spin 2″ (2K Sports)
  • “X-Men: The Official Game” (Activision)

In addition to new games, consumers can extend the experience of existing Xbox 360 titles with new downloadable content available on Xbox Live Marketplace. Microsoft Game Studios confirmed new content for “Project Gotham Racing 3,” including exciting cars and achievements. Fans of “Perfect Dark: Zero” will have access to additional content, including downloadable multiplayer maps. In addition, the unique experience of “Kameo: Elements of Power” will be extended through new online cooperative gameplay options and exciting new costumes for Kameo and her warriors.

Xbox Live Digital Content Distribution Sets Records

Xbox Live Marketplace, a digital download center freely accessible to any Xbox 360 owner with a broadband connection has reached more than 10 million downloads faster than iTunes did when it launched. In fact, more than 85 percent of connected Xbox 360 consoles have already downloaded content from Xbox Live Marketplace - everything from game demos and arcade titles to premier movie trailers and music videos.

Xbox 360 will continue to deliver new online gaming and entertainment experiences including the “Battlefield 2: Modern Combat” game demo(Electronic Arts), the “Burnout Revenge” game demo (Electronic Arts), and the “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” Horse Armor Pack (Bethesda Softworks/2K Games), which will all be available this spring on Xbox Live Marketplace.

Xbox Live, XNA, Top Spin 2 demo in April + an Xbox portable in the works.

Monday, March 20th, 2006

First off, a dev from 2K Sports gave an interview recently, and has confirmed that Top Spin 2 will have a demo just before it’s launch on April 7th, so expect that the first week of April.

Microsoft has also released a Press Release announcing a lot of information on XNA and how it plans to expand on Xbox Live’s servers. The article can be found here, but one thing that has me excited is that they are opening up Xbox Live to allow companies to run their own servers alongside Live’s, so they can offer expanded experiences like PGR3’s Spectator Mode (Gotham TV) or creative features like Burnout Revenge’s online Rival system, where it remembers every single conflict you’ve had with anybody else forever. This move by Microsoft will help to offer less lag, and more creative features, and I can’t wait to see how a developer like Bungie will make of it.

Here is an official Microsoft XNA Presentation page as well.  More news will be happening at GDC this week as well.

Also, Dean Takahashi, who is writing the book, The Xbox 360 Uncloaked: The Real Story Behind Microsoft’s Next-Generation Video Game Console, has posted an article online outlined why he believes an Xbox portable/iPod killer will come out in 2007 from Microsoft. This author was at Microsoft last year to interview people like Xbox Live’s Major Nelson (Larry Hryb, Director of Xbox Live Programming) and I have a feeling that this guy is correct in his “theory”, which you can read about here.

Even though we may not see the fruits of any of this news for a while, the news is still very good for the future, especially when it comes to XNA and Xbox Live, which is where Microsoft has a true advantage in this next-gen console war with Sony.

Xbox Team Reponds to Sony Hype + Halo 3 at E3 2006.

Thursday, March 16th, 2006

Posted by the official Xbox Team at GamerscoreBlog.com,

“This announcement certainly doesn’t change any of our plans. We’ve blasted out of the gate with the greatest launch in the history of video games and we’re keeping our eyes squarely fixed on today and on the Xbox 360 road ahead, including continuous new content and programming through our premier Xbox Live online gaming service, the delivery of 80 high definition games and shipping between 4.5 and 5.5 million consoles by June.

This may come as a shock to folks, but Sony tends to not share their launch plans with us in advance. ;) We’re continuing to stay focused on Xbox 360.”

Microsoft Game Studios’ General Manager, Shane Kim, hinted at Halo 3 yesterday while at the “Viva Pinata” press conference. I’ve been saying since early October, when Halo 3 wasn’t mentioned at X05, that Halo 3’s announcement would be at E3 2006, specifically the first day, on May 9th, 2006, I’ve repeated this prediction many times, and I believe Shane Kim just basically said that’s correct. When asked about the next Halo, Shane Kim responded with,

“We’ll be talking about anything we’re doing in the Halo universe - whether that’s Halo 3 as I call it or anything else - at the right time. That time will be soon.”

Just under 2 months until we see at least some kind of trailer of Halo 3, whether it’s a full-blown game play trailer (which I believe it will be) or just a teaser video of the logo, you can bet on Halo 3 being officially announced after 18 months of silence since Halo 2’s release in November 2004.
